This excursion includes going to the Montagnola craters using the scenic Etna cable car ride and then a descent towards Sciena dell’Asino – a 4km walk with a steep start of about 600 metres.
At the end of the walk you can see the spectacular Valle del Bove, created by very powerful lava flows, among which was one that just missed Zafferana Etnea in 1992.
The flora here is glorious: the excursion is enlivened by the beautiful colours of the violet and juniper that grows on Etna. The naturalist Carlo Gemmellaro remained so enthusiastic that he described the Valle del Bove in the following way:
“Seen in this way, this ensemble of three high slopes and sweep towards the east, the Valley del Bove looks as if it were the only one to roll from the top of the mountains out to the sea.”
