Walking amid the stone-built refuges and pine trees, trekking on Etna provides a unique opportunity to experience nature at its most unspoilt and spectacular.
Altomontana is a path immersed in the lava desert of Etna. It consists of a quite simple, unpaved path at a level of 1700 metres above sea level, over 35 km long which circles almost half of Etna from the north east to the south west. It can be walked in either direction.
Following this route means losing oneself totally in the landscape and history of the volcano. It takes you on a journey to petrified forests , caves, century old craters, lava deserts and woods.
