The Quanat are ancient subterranean tunnels which were dug from the brittle rock below the city of Palermo. These channels were built to bring water to the surface absorbing it from numerous layers of earth. Originally a Persian technique it was built by specialised workers called muqanni.
In this walk we will explore the high Jesuit qanat, a tunnel which branches out in the undersoil of the Altarello quarter. We visit part of this flooded underground warren, accompanied by speleologists equipped with the appropriate equipment.
The oldest tunnels were dug at a depth of 8 metres while the more recent ones go as far as 16 metres.
